This is Eliot Nightray. I can't answer you right now. I'm busy. If it's really that important, leave a message and I'll respond as soon as possible. If it's not, then don't waste my time.
No! There wasn't anything wrong with it! It's just--!
[... Damn it! Of course she took that the wrong way. It was stupid to even mention it! Now she was going to get all unconfident again and think that she did something wrong! That's what she always did.]
[And that was totally his fault. Ever since that dream he'd had, she had been on his mind even more then usual, and as stupid as it was, she would not get out of his head.]
Noel, there's something I've got to ask you, and I expect you to answer me completely seriously. Do you understand?
[She was about apologize profusely again when she gets cut off, but no words of such nature had time to leave her mouth when he changes the subject. Something... he wants to ask her? With her eyes wide with confusion, she wordlessly nods twice. Yes, she understands... she thinks.]
[Or at least, he was intending to. He opened his mouth to ask, but then a horrifying thought came to his mind. The thought of his sister, or even Leo, hiding around the corner, watching their every move. This wouldn't do. The house was too small. It wasn't private at all.]
Actually... This is gonna take a while. I was just about to leave to go to the station anyway, so... Mind if we talk about it on the way?
[He was only half-lying. He was in absolutely no hurry to get to the Police Station, even if he did plan to go in to work. It was the only way he could think of to get them out of the house, without completely dropping the ball on the conversation.
There was no way he was going to let himself dodge around this now.]
[Noel tenses upon anticipating his question due to curiosity... which ends up with her being caught slightly off-guard when he puts it off. Still, if it's going to take a while, it really must be serious... So, she has to take this seriously too! Plus, she had some business at the station to take care of later, so this worked out.]
If course I don't mind! I-I mean, why would I mind...? We're friends, after all.
[Ahh, the question of the past year. They were friends to be sure, but then what? Thinking about this has been what's been eating away at Elliot so much.
They were fairly quiet, until they were finally well away from the house in their walk. Occasionally, Elliot looked over his shoulder to make sure that Vanessa, or someone else, wasn't following them. When he was finally satisfied, he stopped without warning. For a few seconds, he hesitated. He'd been piecing out just what he was going to ask for the whole walk, but still couldn't find any words he thought were right, so he had to just go with his instincts.]
Noel, you remember what happened at the fountain a few months ago, right?
[The silence was awkward, and there were times Noel was tempted to break that silence, but her timidness kept her from speaking. The fact that he kept looking around like he's paranoid kind of makes her wonder what sort of thing they're goin to talk about.
Thankfully, she narrowly avoids crashing into him when he suddenly stops. She blinks at his question. Fountain... a few months ago...]
Umm... I didn't see where I was going and fell into it...?
[No, she isn't making fun of him. The expression on her face made it clear that she's dead serious. She... really isn't the brightest crayon in the box, after all.]
He felt like he was just about to explode with frustration. He already had enough trouble making himself talk about this. He didn't need her making it more difficult.]
[She remembers. Noel really wishes that she didn't, but she remembers. It was the time when she decided to get things over with and tell him how she felt, only to awkwardly get rejected. She felt terrible about it, she felt that it was wrong of her to subject him to so much pressure... It was really difficult to repair the dent it made on their friendship, and Noel didn't want to ruin it even more... so she kept her mouth shut on the matter when she could help it.
Of course, her hesitance to answer was quite reasonable. Her face becoming quite flushed, she gives an quick apologetic bow.]
[His response was instant. He couldn't let her start apologizing. Even then, he knew that he was running her into the ground by rejecting her the way he did.
He wasn't going to make her feel that way ever again.]
I... Ah.
[And for the love of goodness, he couldn't just spit it out! Even without all of the guilty feelings, the subject was still really hard for him to talk about.]
How does she answer that? How can she answer that? Should she answer honestly...? Why was he even bringing it up in the first place? What if she answers truthfully and it makes things awkward again...?
What is he trying to accomplish...?
Well, she made a promise to answer seriously, so... She glances away as she answers, barely audible:]
[Elliot's expression softened for a moment, almost looking sad. He already knew what the answer would be. A part of him wondered what he would have done if she had said 'no'. That would have been easier on him in the current moment, maybe. It would have been horribly anticlimactic. The truth wasn't pleasant to think about.
All of this time, ever since then, she's been feeling the same way. Even when he disappeared and came back, even knowing what had happened to him, and what he'd done, her feelings for him had never changed... And he'd left her this way for months, ignoring the truth.
Like hell he was going to let this go on. Uncertainty be damned.]
[She's been trying so hard to keep it to herself... So why now? Was she being too obvious? She doesn't know the reason why he's bringing up. Well, that was a lie... she did have one idea. She had a hard time believing it was possible, though. There was probably some other reason, but she doesn't know what it is.
What can she do in this situation?
... She knew. There was no other way to go but forward. Though she takes a few noticeable moments of hesitance, she timidly and slowly meets his gaze, almost like a deer in headlights.]
[When you give someone chocolates after admitting something like she did, it's pretty obvious. This should be so simple. He knew exactly what he had to say. 'I. Was. Wrong.' It wasn't supposed to be so hard.
... Except, this was Elliot Nightray trying to say it. Uncertainty may be damned, but but what if she didn't understand what she was getting into? There was no point in hurting her more.]
You're really sure? Do you realize what you're saying? We're from completely different worlds. [For once, those words weren't being used for drama. It was literal.] You know you're talking to a dead man, too. Whatever relationship we have, it's not gonna last forever.
[Okay, enough was enough. All he was giving her were questions and not enough answers. Her seemingly infinite amount of patience is starting to thin.]
I... I know that! Do you even know how many times I've told myself that?
[And there were plenty more issues about this matter on her side. It's not like anything good is waiting for her back in her world either. She knows it might not end well. She knows that things would be complicated. But...]
Despite all that... It doesn't change anything. It's still the same.
[She's frustrated, and it shows. Not just because she doesn't know what this was all about... She was also frustrated that she couldn't change her own feelings. Her just had to go and make her painfully aware of that... What for?]
What... What are you even trying to say, Elliot?! What's the point of all this?
[... She was serious. As she spoke, he watched her calmly, thinking back to how she was when he first met her. At the moment, she was miles away from being the endlessly stuttering unconfident girl that she'd been. Now that he thought about it... It was a year ago that she started really trying to drop hints to him, even though he was too blind to see it. After how he'd always treated her, he never understood.
For so long, to him, romance was cheap and easily shattered. If any girls ever showed him any interest, they wanted to get at his family, not him. Plus, the only reason why he'd even care about girls was because of the pressure on him to find a suitable match as the head of his house. It was one of his only duties as the heir to the household that he would never want to accept.
Noel was different. She was shy, and weepy, and most of all, completely honest. In spite of his constant frustration towards her, she got close to him anyway. Instead of seeing his family, or some silly romantic fantasy, she'd seen who he really was, the good and the bad. After everything that's happened, she still felt the same... He'd call her a moron, but maybe that was what one had to be to be this completely accepting.
[He's not talking about his dream, or the incident at the fountain. It was something he'd said while he was too out of it for his internal filters to work. He had just blurted out exactly what he'd been thinking since she confessed.]
I remember what I told you when I got that plague.
[Noel remembers that day very clearly. She refused to believe it was a glimmer of hope for her persistent feelings. After all, he's the kind of person that really care about his friends... Noel was sure that Leo or even Oz could be easily placed in the same situation. She isn't anyone special...
Part of her is starting to doubt that now, since he brought it up. However, there's also still part of her that thinks it's too good to be true. She's... not really sure how to react right now.]
[He said it softly. Now it was his turn to start looking to the side. Damn. He was never good with situations like this. He'd hardly said anything yet, and already he felt like this was all way too sappy.]
[... She blinks, and her frustration quickly dropped. What. Did he mean---
No no no, there had to be some other explanation. She shouldn't jump to conclusions over something so vague.]
W-Well, of course you did! I mean, we're friends after all...
[It's almost like she's using those words a mantra now to keep herself in check. Her imagination got her into trouble plenty of times, so... she kept telling herself not to get her hopes up. That rejection really must have put a dent in her self-confidence regarding this matter.]
[Of course she was going to get the wrong impression. After what he'd told her before, she probably wouldn't believe him if he said the truth straight.
... Which he wouldn't, as easy as it should have been. It was much harder in practice the it was in his head.]
